Thank you, San Mateo Daily Journal, for covering the latest pedestrian crash in San Mateo. With three pedestrians having died on our streets in the past year, it is important to continue to shine a light on these tragedies in the hopes that our city will respond. This is unacceptable; we need to accelerate the pace of safe streets improvements.
I fear that this is not happening. I am unaware of any actions by the city in response to the three fatalities. Meanwhile, the city seems obsessed with ripping out the San Mateo High bike lanes, a move that will make the streets next to our schools less safe. Last week, more than a dozen city staff members and consultants led a community meeting on how to rip out the bike lanes, despite a plurality of attendees not supporting the proposal. The proposal could cost taxpayers $3 million at a time when we are expecting $15 million budget deficits and allegedly don’t have enough money to make our streets safe for those who walk and bike.
The City Council needs to redirect precious taxpayer dollars and staff time to make our streets safer. The status quo is not acceptable.
