I enjoyed the article about how fat people are to be treated as human beings ("When fat gets 'in your face'" in the Aug. 11 edition of the Daily Journal), I agree that fatness is not caused by moral failings, in fact I would like to give a different analogy, that fat people are fat because they have very strong morality, self control, obviously once you understand physiology, you realize it takes incredible self control and will power to fight one's survival instincts enough to endure a long enough famine to get fat.
Our body's main goal is to keep us alive and prepare for any threats to that, and periodic food restriction is deemed a survival threat, not just immediate but future threat, the body's program says if a famine happened once, twice and three times, it better stock up when food is abundant to prepare for that eventuality. In other words our bodies made us do it.
The only thing I agree about the genetics of it is that people are genetically determined to how sensitive to environmental factors, such as food restriction, some whose bodies are not sensitive to food restriction, thus having poor survival instincts, are the ones who can endure severe famines without the body's interference, these are the ones who eventually diet themselves to death, think Karen Carpenter, she had very low, genetically determined famine sensitivity, that is why her body couldn't override her willpower it didn't even try. Or only made token efforts.
My dad's girlfriend was anorexic, I didn't know it at the time, she literally starved herself to death, I didn't know about anorexia until an adult until after she had died. Her body had low famine sensitivity, because someone whose survival instincts are strong could not be starving like her and sit at a table full of food watching others eat (me and my dad who were invited to dinner at her house a lot).
If I had been dieting I wouldn't of been able to do that, my survival instincts are so strong they will get me to do things against my will, so survival instincts prove to me they will take over the controls if my will and it's will conflict, good thing other wise I would of ended up dieting to death and not even realize it.
