Our friend and neighbor, Michael Weinhauer, helping us with Measure P (extending the earlier measure which limits excessive building heights in the city of San Mateo) has been personally attacked in leaflets distributed at a recent Measure P meeting. We, as friends and neighbors who care about the rapid growth in our city, take offense to this attack. It is out of line, vicious and attempts to detract from the core issue of preserving quality of our neighborhood.
We have a right to organize, meet as neighbors and petition to put measures on the ballot without being personally attacked. The attacker who circulated these slanderous materials failed to disclose who they are. The circulated propaganda that made false allegations about our friend and neighbor is outrageous. I’ve never seen this kind of thing in 22 years of being involved in our local community.
My husband was born and raised here and has always been active in our community. We will not stand for this. We will not allow slanderous words to cloud our focus on this subject. The Measure P initiative is only extending the expiration date so that it can be vetted through the General Plan public process. It is malicious and manipulative to personally attack someone for following due process. The neighbors will stand together in righteous concern for our neighborhood and each other as respected individuals in this community.
I completely agree with you in that scandalous attacks should not be part of our public discourse. We need to act with civility towards one another and respect the views and opinions of all that participate in the discussions. That is why it was so troubling to me when Anna Kuhre and Evan Powell both called Mayor Rick Bonilla's campaign as " violating ethics regulation and sleazy". None of this type of behavior belongs in our debates and hopefully we can move past such attacks on characters.
