Sept. 12 marked a dark day for Millbrae residents. We watched in disbelief as San Mateo County supervisors stripped us of our right to have any say in the future of our community. The consolation for this underhanded process was to throw money at us.
Our democracy is not for sale!
Throughout the meeting it was clear the supervisors had no clue as to what exactly they were voting for. They weren’t certain as to the traffic impact, as evidenced by Supervisor Ray Mueller’s comments, or the economic impact, as seen by Supervisor Canepa’s comments.
Instead, the Board of Supervisors decided to roll the dice and approve the purchase without fully understanding the public safety and fiscal impact of this project’s location. Their message to the county is clear.
The three-ring circus of Sept. 12 could have been avoided had the county performed due diligence and collaborated with Millbrae instead of disenfranchising them.
Instead, we have a project with idiosyncrasies, like an operator with an active San Francisco Superior Court lawsuit alleging elder abuse, which was never disclosed to the county or public.
To our new neighbors, we welcome you with open arms and will treat you with the respect and dignity you deserve.
To the county, wear your scarlet letter of broken trust proudly. We, the people of Millbrae, will hold you accountable for any unintended consequences and will not forget how you tried to buy our democracy.
