Editor,
I am prompted by Matt Grocott’s column, in the Aug. 15 edition of the San Mateo Daily Journal, to write my first ever letter to the editor.
I agree in principle to most of what Matt says but do have some follow-up electric vehicle questions for our government leaders. Aside from the carbon footprint, mining and general risks of the lithium batteries in EVs, I would ask where and how the old/used batteries will be disposed?
Also, another Daily Journal article on Aug. 10 entitled “Closure of 3 California power plants likely to be postponed,” prompts me to ask: “Do we have the cart before the horse here?” I mean, if we need to keep these fossil fuel plants online to provide power for extreme weather conditions in California (similar to recently deciding to keep our Southern California nuclear plant online), and if we are supposed to be eliminating natural gas appliances in favor of all electric ones, and if we are supposed to all be conserving power between 3-9 p.m. daily, is our electric grid really ready for going to all electric powered vehicles as the government is pushing? What am I missing here?

Great letter, Burnie. I don’t think you’re missing anything. Everyone knows that fossil-fuel powered generating plants will continue to provide the bulk of our electricity needs for the near and far future, as long as nuclear power is taboo. If reports are correct, those that own electric cars may want to take note. I hear there’s a proposal to institute technology to “vacuum” the electricity from your electric cars during major outages for emergencies (of course, this emergency might be to keep the lights on at homes of politically-connected people). Imagine plugging in your car to charge up only to find your car is being sucked dry. Range anxiety may be the least of your worries… Taking a blue pill won’t help – actually, taking the blue (Dem) pill is what got you into this mess.
Excellent letter. We will eventually go all electric when technology makes it cheaper than fossils fuels. Meanwhile liberals hope to milk the issue for political gain by touting “climate catastrophe”.
I wonder whether the irony was not lost on the City Council that they may have to recharge these so-called clean trucks with dirty, polluting fossil-fueled generators. Hilarious! And those are our leaders whom we have to look up to? They can apparently not see the forest for the trees. Another example of inclusion and diversity?
