Editor,
Nobody can claim that Amazon’s majority shareholder did not make all the right noises in order to appease the all-powerful consuming masses.
If one considers his public political pronouncements alone and the fact that he owns the very anti-Trump Washington Post, then the richest man in the world would appear to have scored all the progressive badges obligatory in order to appease the most angry, vocal and righteous of today’s consumers as profiled by the latest polls. And yet he has decided not to open a new Amazon Center in Long Island because of opposition from unions, progressive citizens and politicians, who before this very revealing incident would have appeared to be his kindred spirits, his natural ideological brothers. The old wisdom applies: do not judge people by what they say, but by what they actually do when they have to put their own money where their mouth is.
Do we still remember whom did Obama choose to bail out and save when it came to making a choice between the banks and those who had lost a home to foreclosure? Both Amazon’s CEO and Obama made rational, sound choices given their circumstances and our progressive brothers need to understand that reality’s complexity will always trump aspirational beauty in speeches and ideas deceiving simplicity.
