As mask mandates begin to lift, schools have been one of the last places where masks are required. As of March 12, the state will no longer require masks in California schools. However, throughout the pandemic, most schools have relied on county guidelines to direct their health policies around COVID-19. Generally, state and county guidelines have been aligned, but now that case numbers are low and vaccination rates are increasing, we are seeing for the first time that schools themselves are faced with making their own decisions on masking. Here in San Mateo County, masks are strongly recommended in schools but no longer required. School administrators have worked incredibly hard to make decisions throughout the pandemic to follow and stay current with health mandates. Now, in the eleventh hour, it feels a bit like schools are being abandoned by the officials’ support and will have to make their own choices.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about masking in schools, but here are some things I am asking people to consider while deciding the best option for their families.

Thank you for this, Ms. Rietmann-Grout. Well said. I, too, am a high school educator in San Mateo County and worry deeply about the long term consequences of the past two years. SMUHSD has chosen to MAINTAIN the mandate for now in conflict with SM County, CPDH & CDC guidelines. We are in this transition together and I'm disappointed that SMUHSD seems to think that they know more than the health authorities. The challenges and opportunities you mentioned will happen sooner or later for all of our schools. Thank you for reminding us that leading with facts and not fear, kindness and not judgement is the key to building community as we return to post-pandemic normal.

Hey Carson - I think you've got it backwards. The mask mandate was fear driven, and as has been proven by many real experts, including Johns Hopkins, they did nothing but make life miserable for our children and it was certainly not science-based. The whole thing was based on Teacher Union scare tactics and leverage. Well, many of your colleagues had several months of easy living while getting paid. Congratulations for setting our kids at least one year back.

Wish those who claim masking is fear based...to make sure their operating crew removes their masks while opening up their body for whatever procedure

For, it is very uncomfortable for the surgeon & team to wear masks for few hours working inside a body. The operation would go much faster for them and you.

Of course silliness as it has been proven masking works.

Grandson (9 years old and gets it) wears his mask, but his cousins do not. His grandparents & aunt (who cares for them) on his father's side caught Covid from his unmasked cousins. Know that, because they have been isolating at home during the pandemic and the only visitors are family

Grandson doesn't complain about the discomfort of masking and says he understands that it is to protect himself and his family.

He also did NOT like distance learning and is no back in class. Where in the first week...one kid tested positive (they had just come back from vacation out of state). Then two more tested positive and were at the same assigned table. So was my grandson, but he wears his mask. He is convinced that helps avoid infection.

"Lost year" ? well, it all depends. Grandson continues to be at the top of his class (could make the case that the others dropped a few points) and is in the GATE program. They live in S Cal and both parents work. So I've taken time to FaceTime with him and on masking...sent him scientific articles and images for our discussion of how SARS-CoV-2 infects.

He understands that micro aerosols are the main infectious route and that micro aerosols can stay afloat up to 72 hours. That then lead to his comment of why indoors so risky

He also agreed with this video sent to him and understands that it applies to me with 3 high risk factors

Forgot to touch on this fact:

People are still getting infected & dying today, every day so far this year

SARS-CoV-2 hasn't gone away, yet

Don't believe...go search any news site yourself

BenToy – if the operating crew is okay with bodily fluids potentially spraying into their noses and mouths, good luck to them. However, I’m sure both the patient and the operating crew are okay with reducing the amount of bacteria in the operating theatre. Masks have pore sizes small enough to catch most bacteria, but viruses (smaller than bacteria), not so much, which is why they’re ineffective against COVID. Your body, your choice; somebody else’s body, their choice.

Missed how breathing works...

When exhaling, the air exhaled contains aerosols (moisture) that contains whatever is in/on the lungs

Test it if you haven't...exhale onto a mirror or window pane and if you are a mammal, there will be a fog condensed onto the glass

That is the results of aerosols and some are in the micro mm in size

Sure thing, masking filters (traps) and the better for SARS-CoV-2 is N95's...but they still allow some to pass through. More so after they start to load up to capacity. Just like engine oil filters, there is a bypass valving effect when loaded up. That is to push the filter away from your face, foiling the seal around your face.

Mask filtration sizing and efficiency. Note that exhale is generally of aerosols that contains virus cells...Meaning larger than just the virus cell itself. Though there might be some just virus cells
