Managers of California’s bullet train project announced what they termed an “historic milestone” last month: “the creation of more than 10,000 construction jobs since the start of high-speed rail construction.”

That takes a little explaining.

Projected HSR ridership doesn’t support the HSR because people will increasingly prefer to use their self driving EVs to get to LA so they’ll have a car when they get there. This means exiting highways will have to be expanded anyways. The HSR will not reduce the number of people who need to get to LA faster. Spending money to build the HSR will increase jobs but so would spending the money on far more needed infrastructure projects. The HRS is a money pit for California.

Mr. Walters, you’ve pretty much summarized the crux of the problem with your statement, “…its supporters — particularly construction unions — ramped up pressure and Newsom quickly insisted that he wanted to not only continue construction but expand it on both ends…” Newsom knows which side his bread is buttered on, as well as complicit Dems. And many knew before this boondoggle began that it was a union labor giveaway. There was a recent report lowering the estimate of riders of this train. Not surprising as how many folks not living the area are going to bother taking a train from Merced to Bakersfield? Even those living in the area are probably going to forego this wasteful expense of a train.
