When Lisa Petrides first ran for the community college district board four years ago, her emphasis was on the student. That’s still the case, and she consistently seeks ways to support the student both in and out of the classroom while also ensuring teachers have what they need to give them a top-quality education.
Petrides has been part of a new day for the district, when it came out of the shadows of controversy. In this time, the district has established a solid foundation to ensure free tuition in years to come while also quelling controversies through the hiring of a new chancellor.
We would like to see more communication from the district and its administration, but perhaps that will come with time.
Her opponent, Keith Holden, is a good candidate with his finger on the pulse of the community and a good education foundation. However, he seems to agree with much of what Petrides says as both tout the importance of a satellite campus on the coast and job training for students. That’s good, because it makes sense, but we would have liked to see more daylight between their stances and some new ideas. Both would be great on the board, and bring much to the table, but the edge goes to Petrides, who has been doing the job and doing it well.
