The following is a copy of a letter sent out to members of the California State Employees Association, Chapter 411, of the San Mateo-Foster City School District with recommendations for the November election.
In early September the Political Action Committee (PAC) representing the classified members of the San Mateo-Foster City School District met to discuss the possible endorsement of School Board Candidates running for office in the upcoming Nov. 6, 2001 election. This process involved discussion as to the responsibility of the PAC to inform its membership on the candidates' qualifications and whether or not it is in the best interest of the CSEA membership that endorsements be made.
On Sept. 10 a questionnaire developed by the PAC was sent to all challengers seeking election to the Board or Trustees. They were asked for their responses to 14 questions, which ranged from what their qualifications are to serve on the Board, their priorities, to who their supporters are. We also wanted to know if they knew the difference between classified and certificated and what were their views on Collective Bargaining, Agency Shop, classified members serving on decision-making committees, and how they felt about contracting out of school services. We asked that this questionnaire be returned and postmarked no later than Sept. 20 to give the PAC time to review them so that their recommendations could be presented at a special meeting held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001.
At this meeting, all information was shared and discussed with those members that attended. A motion was then made and seconded to make the following endorsements:
1. CSEA will endorse W. Charles Perry to serve a four-year term on the San Mateo-Foster City Board of Trustees. Charles is a product of Public Education who has completed three years of Ph.D. studies in Fire Protection Engineering at UC Berkeley. He has two daughters in our district's schools worked as a classroom tutor at Fiesta Gardens and saw the Importance of volunteer assistance, served on the FGIS Site Council for two years, worked on the SMFCSD Facilities Advisory Committee for one year, and worked on the SMFCSD Fiscal Advisory Committee. His priorities while serving on the Board are to restore order, cooperation, vision, and leadership to the school board, to give teachers and staff a new pay raise, and to build new district facilities at Turnbull. Charles supports Collective Bargaining and Binding Arbitration and believes that the views of classified staff should be represented on all committees that affect their employment.
2. CSEA will endorse Ally Nuschy-Lenat to serve a four-year term on the San Mateo-Foster City Board of Trustees. Ally wants to build a cohesive district where all members
