Patricia Arlene Fels Freeman passed peacefully at home in Boise, ID on Christmas night, 2018,
after a long struggle with cerebellar ataxia and dementia. She was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, to Gladys (Dempsey) and Clarence G. Fels on March 15, 1939. A 1957 graduate of North Plainfield High School, she went on to attend College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, New Jersey. Pat graduated St. E’s in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts in history and a minor in English and secondary education.
Pat married Don Freeman in 1961. Prior to having their three children, Pat taught the 3rd grade. The young family moved to California in 1970 where Pat made cherished lifelong friends and was an active part of the San Mateo community for the next 30 years. She was a longstanding and enthusiastic volunteer with many organizations. Pat eventually began a career with Wells Fargo Bank where she flourished and enjoyed the close friendships of many co-workers.
In 2000, Pat pursued her dream and moved over the hill to Ocean Colony, Half Moon Bay. There she cultivated many friendships and was active in the Coast Women’s Club and its many offshoots during her 15 years on Burning Tree Road. Pat loved her bridge and mahjong groups; she liked the games, but she especially delighted in socializing with her many treasured friends.
Pat loved to travel and enjoyed many trips over the years with her beloved sisters Janet and Nancy, her children and her close friends. She was a lover of animals, especially dogs, and took pleasure in frequent walks on the beach with Ursa and then Hogan. The 49ers were Pat’s team and, despite their recent off-years, she would enthusiastically cheer and appreciate a good play. When there were no sports on, we would often watch the double header of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy; Dave, mom and Caroline loudly competing against the contestants, always with mom’s favorite mint chocolate chip ice cream bar in hand!
Pat will be remembered for her infectious laugh, warm and welcoming smile and boundless energy. Those lucky enough to have known Pat felt her vibrant spirit which lit up a room! She was gracious and generous always, had a positive outlook despite her disease, a sharp sense of humor and a zest for life that never dimmed until she was ready to go home.
Pat is survived by her loving family including daughter Caroline (Dave) and granddaughters Gaby and Sarah of Boise, ID, son Michael of Fairfax, CA, daughter Elizabeth (Don) and granddaughter Samantha of Monument, CO, sister Nancy (Do) Tubbs of Mantoloking, MJ and Vero Beach, FL and many adoring nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by her sister Janet Regan and her former husband Don. A celebration of her life is being planned for March 2019 in Half Moon Bay.
