Dale W. Sly, resident of San Bruno, died peacefully in his home of 53 years on Nov. 9, 2009 at the age of 90. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jane; daughter Daleen Olson of Albuquerque, N.M.; son Kenneth Sly (Suzanne) of San Mateo; grandchildren, Stacey, Brent (Jennifer), Michael (Sandra) and Erin; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Andrew and Calvin; and nieces and nephews. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, William and Reta Sly and brother, Merrill Sly.
Dale was born and raised in South Dakota, served in the Army (1940-1945) during World War II, was in the South Pacific for 43 months achieving the rank of captain.
In 1948, Dale was hired as a professor at the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science (SFCMS). While teaching, he completed his master’s degree in education from San Francisco State College. In 1963, he became president of SFCMS and retired in 1985.
Dale always took an active leadership role in the community, serving as president of many organizations including PTAs, AARP and the San Bruno Senior Advisory Board. Dale was a member of New Vision United Methodist Church and was chairman of many committees.
The family gives special thanks to his devoted caregivers, Anna, Kali and Ata.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday Nov. 21 at New Vision United Methodist Church, 450 Chadbourne Ave., Millbrae.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Vision UMC or a charity of your choice.
