Oakland, Calif., -- The landlord who allegedly used hi-tech visas to smuggle girls from India for sex will plead guilty to some charges, according to an assistant U.S. attorney.
Lakireddy Bali Reddy, 63, has pleaded innocent to the charges since they were filed against him in January. On Monday, however, he will change that plea, according to a new document filed by Assistant U.S. Attorney John Kennedy in federal court here. Kennedy did not write which charges Reddy may admit to and did not return a call for comment Tuesday.
Reddy's attorney also did not return a phone call for comment.
In the document, Kennedy said that one of Reddy's brothers and two of his sons will also plead guilty.
Reddy owns some 1,100 apartment units in the East Bay. It was in one of those apartments that a 17-year-old girl died of carbon monoxide poisoning last November. Reddy has not been charged in that incident, but in January was arrested for allegedly bringing that girl and at least two others from his home village of Velvadam, India on falsely filed high-tech visas. Allegedly, Reddy brought the girls from India to have sex with them.
Reddy's son, Vijay Kumar Lakireddy, has been charged with helping arrange the false visas. The others named in Kennedy's document have not been charged. They are Reddy's son Prasad Lakireddy; Reddy's younger brother, Jayprakash Lakireddy, and the brother's wife, Annapurna Lakireddy.<
