A man who pleaded no contest to falsely imprisoning a woman at San Francisco International Airport rather than face trial on charges of sexual battery and criminal threats was sentenced yesterday to one year in the county jail.
Mandeep Singh Deol, 23, has little more than a month left to serve. He received credit for the 326 days he's been in custody since his arrest in the March 10 incident. Deol must also spend three years on supervised probation following his sentence, pay fines, enroll in an educational program through the probation department, abstain from alcohol or weapons and have no contact with the victim.
Deol agreed to the plea Sept. 21 in return for no more than a year in jail and the dismissal of the other charges. The District Attorney's Office balked at the plea, pushing for a two-year prison maximum instead, but was overruled by Judge Phrasel Shelton.
According to prosecutors, the woman was walking to her car March 10 when Deol approached her and forced her to her car where she was sexually assaulted. Deol's defense attorney claims the two people had an ongoing relationship.
Deol told the woman he was a "Punjabi warrior" and such warriors kill women who refuse them, according to a sheriff's detective who testified during a preliminary hearing.
