A judge found sufficient evidence to try a San Bruno man accused of killing his neighbor and cutting up the body in a dispute over a space heater after six witnesses testified in a preliminary hearing Friday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
David Stubblefield, 50, pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, felony possession of a firearm, felony possession of tear gas and destruction of evidence in April after he allegedly pepper-sprayed his 77-year-old friend and neighbor Benjamin Roybal and shot him to death March 11, according to prosecutors.
Stubblefield and Roybal lived on the 3000 block of Pacific Heights Boulevard, police said previously. Officers discovered Roybal’s body on April 6 following a report that Roybal was missing. Stubblefield allegedly killed him over the price of a space heater, and later tried to get rid of the body using chemicals, according to prosecutors.
Stubblefield will next appear in court July 20 for Superior Court arraignment. He remains in custody on $10 million bail, according to prosecutors.
