Facing the possibility of an eminent domain action, F&F Plumbing, located at 2030 South Delaware St., could be forced to close its doors after operating a successful family owned company for more than 20 years in San Mateo. The business has been located on Delaware Street for three years.
The city intends to build a new police station at that site, as the current station is seismically unsafe and much of the technology is outdated, according to city officials.
The city considered several sites and narrowed the selection down to two key sites. In addition to the F&F Plumbing site the city looked at the corporation yard which is actually connected to the police station and fronts on Pacific Boulevard.
"We are looking at pursuing F&F Plumbing at city council's direction," said Patti McHugh, project manager.
The city is currently in its preliminary stages for planning, but it will soon be proceeding with the requests for proposal for architects, McHugh said.
City staff has not had much contact with the property owner -- John Eigler, said Roy Abrams, city attorney.

"We're putting together information and preparing some preliminary things before staff will actually sit down and talk with the property owner," Abrams said.
If the property owner does work out a deal with the city in an eminent domain action, all the proceeds will go to the owner and not the tenant.
However, the tenant can claim "losing good will" which means the law will recognize losses to the tenant and he/she will then be compensated as well.
At this point, though, the city is not sure what action will be taken and how much compensation will be provided.
San Mateo voters passed a hotel tax initiative in 1998 which will help pay for some of the work at the new station. The latest estimate on the price tag for the new station is $28 million. Abrams said he did not currently have an estimate as to how much the city would offer Eigler.
McHugh, the project planner, said the city is shooting to select an architect by April and bring a recommendation to city council at that time. The station will not be completed until sometime in the Spring of 2004.
