Student rally 2

Students and local officials gathered at Cañada College Thursday to rally in support of Senate Bill 893, a measure currently awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature that, if signed, would allow the San Mateo County residents to attend community college here for free.

“This is an idea whose time has come because it’s all about our students and giving them access to higher education,” said state Sen. Josh Becker, D-San Mateo. “It puts students first. It gives them more opportunities to succeed in education, in life, in their careers and in their futures.”

While there should be some strings attached, low cost or free college is a great service to those cannot afford or do not qualify for a 4-year college. Assuming that these graduates will not move out of the State, they will be paying more taxes than those without an advanced education. In other words, a good investment by the State. I was a beneficiary of low tuition in the early 70s and I am sure that my accumulated tax payments over the last years more than covered the subsidy that I received when needed.

Dirk,

You touched on the subject I was going to mention. When I attended Foothill College in the sixties the cost was minimal. I don't remember if the fees were per unit or just a flat registration fee but they were nominal. Only real expense was textbooks and supplies. Of course that was back when education was important and California schools were highly ranked.

Taffy - imagine, when I transferred from CCSF to UC Berkeley the tuition was $212.50 per quarter. The campus went later to semesters after I graduated. The tuition is now obscenely high.

There is no such thing as "free" in this world - somebody somewhere is going to have to foot the bill.
