A 15-year-old kayaker is in critical condition after being struck by a motorized boat in the San Mateo Lagoon Sunday, Oct. 28.
The teenage victim, a San Mateo resident, was transported to a local trauma center, said police Lt. Amanda Von Glahn, and the man who crashed into the teen is 48-year-old Stephen Chiari, also a San Mateo resident.
The collision occurred just before 4 p.m. and police responded to the San Mateo Lagoon behind the 600 block of Fathom Drive. Von Glahn said an investigation into what exactly happened is underway, adding only that alcohol was a contributing factor.
Chiari was arrested for reckless operation of a boat, operating a boat while intoxicated and for a B.U.I with injury, according to a press release.
