San Carlos officials yesterday announced that management unit employees will take a 5.3 percent cut in pay and benefits, bringing the total amount workers have conceded to 8 percent.
The City Council will formally consider the proposed reductions at its June 28 meeting. If approved, the cuts will save the city $246,000 and bring the total manager compensation reductions to 8 percent. The city and management unit agreed to two previous sets of cuts since March.
The first changes eliminated a 2.75 percent cost of living increase and gave up medical premium increases. The new resolution includes a pay cut of 1.5 percent effective July 1, elimination of vacation time payout and reducing holiday pay from 40 to 24 hours per week. City contributions to medical premiums are also frozen as of Jan. 1, 2011 and new hires have their benefits dropped to 2 percent at 55.
"Management employees have agreed to help the city by further reducing their overall benefit and salary package — not just deferring increases to future years, but making real cuts to base pay and benefits. The agreement is the result of the strong relationships that exist in San Carlos between the city, its employees and employee organizations,” said City Manager Mark Weiss in a written announcement of the reductions.
