After concerns were raised by residents, Redwood City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz provided a recent update on how the city is looking to improve the safety and quality of life concerns at Sequoia Station.
A letter sent to Stevenson Diaz early this month detailed concerns from resident Kris Johnson who said the station “has become a haven for people who are drinking, littering, loitering, and taking over our transit shelters for their own personal use.”
The letter was also shared on Facebook, which generated significant engagement from the community, mainly from residents who shared the concerns.
The city has been working with Samtrans and Caltrain on improvements, Stevenson Diaz said at the Dec. 16 City Council meeting. These improvements include more frequent pressure washing, daily trash pick up, weekly inspections and newly installed cameras to “monitor criminal activity.”
New plants in areas once used for encampments “has been effective for reducing that activity,” Stevenson Diaz said. Caltrain is also considering a paid fare zone at its station to minimize loitering — individuals would need to show they were in the zone because they bought a ticket and are about to board the train.
While not all incidents are related to people who do not have housing, in instances where they are, Stevenson Diaz said the city is “continuing to provide outreach services.” Stevenson Diaz said homelessness is a top concern of residents.

“We need to recognize that these transit centers don’t just exist in a vacuum, they exist in a community,” Councilmember Jeff Gee said. “We can’t just keep moving people around.”
In her letter, Johnson pointed out that Redwood City has dedicated a substantial amount of resources toward providing services for homeless individuals, but the transit stations suggest they are not being utilized.
“We are a city of big shoulders and have set the standard for homeless services,” Johnson wrote. “On the surface, it appears our County and Transit officials are oblivious to the situation or neglectful at best.”
Stevenson Diaz also shared that Redwood City Police Department — who is responsible for responding to incidents at the stations, while the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office handles matters on the buses or trains — is considering implementing a satellite office space at Sequoia Station to allow for quick response times.
“We need to find a strategy that works that ensures that our riders and community members are safe and don’t feel intimidated or harassed or uncomfortable riding the train,” Gee said. “To get ridership up, we need to make sure people feel safe, not only on the trains or buses, but in our stations too.”
There is no other transit center along the Caltrain line (including SF and SJ) in such a dreadful condition. One had to ask why? Here is a simple request to Samtrans…enforce your own Code of Conduct that you recently adopted which prohibits much of the behavior we see at the Redwood City transit center.
RWC, asking democrats and a sanctuary city to do as they say is against the democrat code of ethics. Sanctuary city's bring in riff-raff, filth and varmints, however there is good news. Come January 20, 2025, there will be a new sheriff in town USA and these city's who protect criminals over US citizens will soon be dealt with.
Good grief, smoking is bad and pot is good according to CA. If it bothers you then move a few feet away for some grief relief. BTW, i don’t smoke but people should be free to freely express themselves and enjoy life
Shoplifting is illegal as well but people do it. The point, don’t get your undies in a bunch and move to a safe haven if someone happens to be smoking.
Let's face it, it is easy to strive for the lowest common denominator. I just wonder why the tax payers in RC are putting up with this? It seems representative governing has disappeared in that city. Only loud-mouth, bleeding heart, interlopers seem to run the asylum. It has become the most taxed and regulated city in San Mateo county.

Leave my undies out of it. Second hand smoke it worse than actually smoking.

How about STOPPING the incessant SMOKING while waiting for a bus?
I will trade 100 bill for one LE making the loiterers quit smoking.
