A 22-year-old Redwood City man found guilty of sexually assaulting an unconscious victim was sentenced to four years in prison, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Joshua Meyers was found guilty on four counts on Jan. 7, with two remaining rape charges going to mistrial after a 11-1 jury vote. A retrial on the two remaining counts was deadlocked with an 8-4 jury vote May 17.
The DA’s Office chose not to proceed with trying the two rape charges for a third time, Wagstaffe said, although he emphasized that Meyers will register as a sex offender for life, a fact the presiding judge also highlighted.
“As far as the community and justice system feel, he’s a sex offender,” Wagstaffe said.
Meyers was found guilty on one felony count of assault with an intent to rape, one felony count of false imprisonment, and two misdemeanors — sexual battery and distribution of video of intimate body parts, according to the DA’s Office.
In August 2021, Meyers allegedly raped the victim while she was unconscious after a party at his home.
Investigation revealed that Meyers told several people the victim had been drunk and he had sex with her and that he sent friends a video of her genitalia while she was unconscious, the DA’s Office said.
He currently faces nine to 10 years and will face 17 to 18 if convicted on the remaining two charges, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said previously.
