A Redwood City man is in jail for allegedly stealing from a convenience store on Fifth Avenue and brandishing a large knife when confronted by the clerk Saturday afternoon, according to police.
At about 12:17 p.m., officers responded to the store at 895 Fifth Ave., and encountered the clerk who said he retreated into the store when the man displayed the knife in a threatening manner, then took off on foot, according to police.
Officers shared the description with other agencies, including the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, whose deputies detained a man matching the description close by. The stolen merchandise and knife were also located nearby, according to police.
The man was identified as Luis Montes Hernandez, according to police, and he was arrested and booked.
