San Mateo police are investigating the murder of a 25-year-old man yesterday in the North Central neighborhood - an area recently plagued by violence including three gang shootings.
Few details are being released about the "ongoing homicide investigation," said Sgt. Joe Pierucci, who was on the crime scene at 102 S. Idaho St. near Second Avenue until early this morning. Sgt. Bob Szelenyi said he is not aware of any arrests in the case so far.
This is the second time in a week that area has been marred by violence. Last Wednesday, police were called to the 300 block of Grant Street near Third Avenue for a gang-related shooting. In that case, the victim survived.
Police don't think yesterday's homicide was gang-related, Pierucci said. The murder was also not the result of a home invasion, he said. Pierucci declined to say what may have incited the crime. It is not known what weapon may have been used.
Although police received the call at about 5:51 p.m., detectives were still inside the multi-unit dwelling past midnight. The Coroner's Office confirmed that the body was received last night.
