Millbrae police ended a 20-hour standoff with a suicidal man by simply leaving the scene yesterday morning after calling for the SWAT team and pulling officers from the Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol.
"We served him with an emergency protective order and the wife and son moved out," said Millbrae Capt. Mike Grogan.
Daniel Ray Lewis refused to leave the house in the 700 block of Chadbourne Avenue and Grogan said police could not go in and get him. At 6 a.m. yesterday, after a 20-hour standoff and a midnight surveillance of the house, police picked up and went back to the station. Lewis remained in his house.
Grogan gave no reason for keeping officers at the scene for 20 hours.
Daniel Ray Lewis, barricaded himself in his garage Tuesday after a domestic violence incident with his wife. Police believed the suspect was armed with three handguns. He lost part of his brain a few years ago from a medical procedure and could have a crystal methamphetamine addiction, Grogan said.

Police have responded to the Lewis house multiple times in the past, Grogan said.
The incident reportedly began as a domestic violence call. Lewis allegedly threatened to kill his wife, after which the woman left the home and called police, Grogan said.
The SWAT team was called to the scene by Millbrae police, but never entered the house. SWAT packed up and went home Tuesday afternoon. Two sheriff deputies and a Millbrae officer were stationed in front of the house all night in case Lewis came out.
