A San Mateo woman described as an immeasurably selfless and loving mother and friend was killed when struck by a vehicle whose driver was making a left turn from North Delaware Street onto Peninsula Avenue Sept. 12, preliminary reports indicate.

The woman, Yolanda Villar, is survived by her 18-year-old daughter, Stephanie Villar, and her sister Angela Villar, said Arli Torres — a close family friend, who was like a niece to Yolanda. Stephanie Villar, who has special needs, was always Yolanda Villar’s foremost consideration, Torres said.

In many countries it would be impossible to allow pedestrians and cars moving at the same time. One of the most dangerous versions is the walk signal combined with a speeding car going left. A few years back a professional SamTrans bus driver killed a pedestrian this way.

The right-on-red outlived it's purpose as well. Once created to improve fuel efficiency, it has been clear that all improvements in fuel efficiency just led to people buying bigger cars with worse fuel efficiency horrible line-of-sights, killer grilles, and more speed. Basically right-on-red never lived up to its promise.

More people will die until, left and right hand turns are eliminated while pedestrians have the walk signal. Its not that hard, already working in Japan.

Not So Common

The story indicated she was talking on her phone, most likely she was distracted, and not paying attention, which is very common and it most likely contributed to the accident. Rather than eliminating left and right hand turns, perhaps people shouldn’t talk on their phones while they’re walking, and especially when they are pushing a stroller and or caring for children.
