Malcolm D. Jones, M.D., died Monday, April 16th after a long battle with cancer. He was at home with his family at the time of death.
Dr. Jones was born in Orange and raised as a Quaker. He started at UC Berkeley in 1940 and completed medical school at UC San Francisco in March of 1946. He did an internship at the San Diego Naval Hospital and was immediately sent oversees as medical officer on a Naval ship stationed in Tsing Tao, China.
He was sent home to San Diego with Hepatitis in 1948, and then contracted Bulbar polio while recuperating. He was given a medical discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1950.
He married Margaret Fisher in June 1945 and he, his wife, and three young children returned to UCSF where Dr. Jones did his internship in radiology. After passing his Boards in 1953, he became an instructor at UCSF specializing first in therapy, and then diagnosis.
He became a full professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiology in 1965. He and Mrs. Jones had two additional children in the 1950s and raised their family of five in Millbrae.
In 1974, Dr. Jones was named Chairman of Radiology at the University of Texas, San Antonio, where he served with distinction until 1979. He and his wife then returned to California, where he established a new diagnostic radiology residency-training program at the V.A. Medical Center in Fresno, CA, in his capacity at Vice Chairman of Radiology for UCSF. While in Fresno, he also established the annual research symposium centered at Fresno State University.
In 1979, Dr. Jones became Vice Chairman of Radiology at UC Irvine Medical School and spent the next 15 years teaching and doing clinical medicine at the Orange County Hospital where he had been born. He was actively involved in joint research projects with the medical school faculty at UC San Diego. During those years he also served at Chairman of Radiology for the V.A. Hospital in Long Beach. After retiring in 1996, he and his wife moved back to Northern California to be with their family.
In 1968, Dr. Jones established the American Association of Academic Chief Residents in Radiology, A3CR2, a national organization for research and support of young radiologists. In 1980, the organization established the Malcolm D. Jones Annual Oration in his honor.

Dr. Jones served on the Executive Board of the Radiological Society of North America, and became president of the RSNA in 1988. During his tenure with the RSNA, Dr. Jones was instrumental in the development of the Research and Education Fund, dedicated to distributing fellowships to young researchers and future academics in radiology.
Dr. Jones had an intense interest in health care delivery in third-world countries and helped to establish the RSNA Committee to Study Continuing Medical Education in Evolving Nations. He was author of over 50 technical papers based on his research on the cervical spine and the mastoid processes in the skull.
With his wife Margaret as illustrator, he authored Basic Diagnostic Radiology, a textbook for first-year residents. He did extensive research on degenerative diseases of the spine and was one of the original pioneers in X-ray cinematography for diagnosis.
Dr. Jones was President of the Academic Senate at both UC San Francisco and at UC Irvine during his time as a faculty member at both schools. He was awarded the Gold Medal for distinguished service by the RSNA and the American College of University Radiologists.
Dr. and Mrs. Jones were named Citizens of the Year in Tustin for their work setting up a corps of senior citizens to act as volunteers in local public schools.
Dr. Jones is survived by his wife, Margaret Jones and four children, Malcolm Jones Jr. of Orange, Roger Jones of San Mateo, Margaret Aycinena of San Mateo, and Linda Rohan of Denver. His daughter, Sheryl Parker of San Jose, preceded him in death. Dr. Jones is also survived by 11 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Social Action Committee of the New Vision Methodist Church, 450 Chadbourne Ave, Millbrae 94030. Services will be held Friday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the church.<
