San Mateo County supervisors will honor former Supervisor and County Sheriff Don Horsley, who died in November 2023 after a lifetime of public service, by naming a new park after him.
The new park will be named Don Horsley County Park at Tunitas Creek Beach.
The county, Peninsula Open Space Trust and California State Coastal Conservancy partnered to secure $13.4 million to purchase the Tunitas Creek Beach property and to transform it into the County’s newest park,” Warren Slocum, president of the Board of Supervisors, said.
“Owing to Don’s leadership and tireless efforts, the public will have access to Tunitas Creek Beach’s pristine, one-mile stretch of sandy beach, offering San Mateo County residents and visitors an opportunity to connect with the natural world and to enjoy unparalleled views,” Slocum said in a statement.
The beach is framed by sandstone cliffs easily visible from Highway 1. Yet, the beach was not publicly accessible as surrounding land was in private hands. That did not stop many who created unsafe and environmentally damaging routes through private land and the creek, turning the beach into a destination for large, multinight parties.
Work now underway includes an ADA-accessible pathway that will wind down to a midbluff area with picnic tables, interpretive panels, restrooms and tiered seating that offers panoramic views.
Nice article and sentimental naming. However, the property is located several miles south of Half Moon Bay and therefore is in unincorporated San Mateo County.
