After nearly a year waiting for a new post office to open after its closure for an elementary school development, Foster City officials announced it will open for business Saturday, Dec. 15 — just in time for late holiday shipping.
The new post office is at 750 Alma Lane, Ste. 100, next to Foster City Hall. The U.S. Postal Service closed the former location at Charter Square Shopping Center in January. The new location is 3,800 square feet and includes modern design and space for customer service counters and post office boxes.
U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, had gotten involved in the effort to open to the new post office.
“I am very pleased that this is done,” Speier said in a city press release. “Residents will finally have a post office again after almost a year of waiting. USPS services are crucial to individuals and businesses alike. For a while there it looked like construction delays and the Grinch were going to prevent this opening before the holidays. I commend the USPS staff and the city of Foster City staff and City Council for their collaboration, perseverance, and patience. This is a great way to end 2018.”
The new post office was due to open in September until the U.S. Postal Service informed the city of a delay “primarily due to lead time needed to obtain the equipment necessary to complete the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system,” according to city previously.
“I am glad that the work of the city staff and City Council, the Office of Congresswoman Jackie Speier, and the USPS has finally reached a successful outcome,” Dante Hall, Foster City assistant city manager, said in the release. “Postal services are again available to the Foster City community.”
