A San Mateo man who struck four boys with his car in Burlingame after driving it onto the sidewalk was sentenced Friday to 16 years state prison, with 1,867 days credit after being found guilty of five felony counts by a jury in May, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office said.
Omeed Sean Adibi, 22, hit the boys after erroneously believing they had earlier vandalized his car on the evening of Feb. 29, 2020, according to the DA’s Office.
Two 12-year-old boys and three 13-year-old boys were walking on Howard Avenue near Clarendon Road when Adibi hit them with the Mercedes, prosecutors said. One 12-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury, and one of the 13-year-old victims suffered a spinal injury and lung bruising, prosecutors said.
Hearings for the case have been ongoing for over two years, and a judge had rejected Adibi’s defense request for mental health diversion. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
He was found guilty of five felony counts including assault with a deadly weapon and felony hit-and-run resulting in serious injury. The jury found him not guilty of attempted murder and lesser counts including attempted voluntary manslaughter, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Two of the boys have recovered, however, two still suffer from the injuries. Ten family members addressed the court during sentencing Friday, Aug. 9, and described the ongoing trauma caused by Adibi’s actions. The case was continued to Sept. 20 for restitution report and order, according to prosecutors.
