Foster City residents will no longer have to leave town to go to the post office after officials announced construction will begin this week on a new facility at 750 Alma Lane next to City Hall.
The renovation is expected to take about two months to complete with a projected opening date of Sept. 15. The new “full-service” location will occupy about 3,800 square feet with “ample” counter space and room for P.O. Boxes, according to a press release.
“We are extremely happy that the post office will be reopening its doors,” said Assistant City Manager Dante Hall. “Postal services are extremely important to our community and the Charter Square Post Office has enjoyed the loyal patronage of local residents for many years. We are also grateful to our residents for their patience over the past several months.”
Foster City has been without a post office since late January. That’s when the lease expired for the previous location at Charter Square, which closed in anticipation of construction on a new elementary school there. Residents have been forced to travel to San Mateo’s post office in the meantime. And while many are happy to have a post office return, some are still frustrated with the slow-moving process.
“It’s an inconvenience and I’ve talked to a lot of people who have been upset,” said resident Susanne Thiel. “The city has tried its best to get it going and I don’t know why it takes so long. Two months is a long time to wait — that’s eight months without a post office and every city should have one.”
Hall said the landlord and USPS had been in negotiations since the Charter Square post office closed and the agency looked at a few locations in town before settling on the one on Alma Lane.

“It just worked itself through the process, and we kept constant pressure and continued to work with post office officials and Congresswoman Jackie Speier,” Hall said, adding that Speier’s office has been “instrumental” in communicating the urgent need for a new post office “all the way up to Washington, D.C.”
Speier commented on the news in a press release of her own.
“We’ve worked closely with Foster City and USPS to expedite the opening of a new post office, an essential service that Foster City residents rely on,” Speier said in the release. “I am relieved that the search is finally over, construction will begin immediately, and that the new post office is scheduled to open in six weeks.”
Hall celebrated the new post office for being more centrally located than the previous one and accessible via a major road — Foster City Boulevard — with ample parking.
