Jurors took a scant 12 minutes Wednesday to convict a woman of carrying cocaine in her luggage at San Francisco International Airport nearly a year ago.
The three-day trial of Lakisha Renee Sykes, 30, ended with the brief deliberations and immediate sentencing to three years supervised probation, completion of Proposition 36 drug treatment and standard fines.
Sykes’ conviction comes two months after the jury in her first trial deadlocked 11 to 1 in favor of guilt.
Sykes was arrested Dec. 28, 2004 by SFO police after being asked to open a locked box in her luggage. Inside, police found .52 grams of cocaine which she allegedly confessed to owning. Prosecutors also discovered Sykes is loosely linked to one of four San Bruno men murdered over a drug-debt more than three years ago. Sykes was the last person called from a cell phone found at the scene but was never linked to the crime or called as a witness in the Jan. 11, 2002 deaths.<
