A bill introduced to Congress by Tom Lantos (D-San Mateo/San Francisco) was signed by President Clinton on Wednesday. The bill "Golden Gate National Recreation Area Boundary Adjustment Act of 2000" will expand the boundaries of the Golden Gate National Recreation area to include an additional 1,000 acres in San Mateo County, Marin County and San Francisco.
The 1,000 acres is currently undeveloped land. Nine hundred acres of those are in San Mateo County, primarily in and around Pacifica; 95 acres are in Marin County and 2 acres are in San Francisco.
About half of the total costs in acquiring these lands is provided by donations of land from local government and private non-profit conservation organizations.
Lantos introduced the bill with the support of Congresswomen Lynn Woolsey (D-Marin County) and Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) and with the co-sponsorship of all the other Bay Area members of Congress.
Geraldine O'Connor, press secretary for Lantos said the non-profit, Trust for Public Land is buying Mori Point - coastline in Pacifica. "This is considered the jewel of the bill, it is a magnificent piece of coastline," O'Connor said.

O'Connor said Lantos' motivation was to ensure that the lands remain undeveloped. "He wants to forever preserve the beautiful lands so they can be enjoyed by all Americans," O'Connor said. "And to ensure that the lands will not be lost to development."
This is the third in a series of successful environmental bills Lantos has introduced to Congress, O'Connor said.
After President Clinton signed the bill, Lantos stated in a press release that, "This is a great victory for all of us in the Bay Area. This important legislation now provides permanent protection and public access to these stunningly beautiful natural areas."
