About 200 people evacuated after a natural gas leak in San Mateo Wednesday afternoon have been allowed back into their buildings, San Mateo fire Battalion Chief John Warren said.
Around 3:30 p.m., the fire department received a report of a gas line at 1650 S. Amphlett Blvd. that was accidentally broken by a construction crew.
The crew had been digging to repair storm drains on the parking lot of the property, and they accidentally hit a 2-inch gas main, according to Warren.
The resultant leak was noticeable throughout surrounding neighborhoods, Warren said.
Three engines, a ladder truck and a battalion chief responded to the scene, and evacuated people from four buildings. Warren said that streets in the adjacent area were also closed for about 90 minutes, until Pacific Gas and Electric crews could respond.
The leak was capped by PG&E, buildings were ventilated, and people were allowed to return to their offices around 6 p.m., Warren said.
