Medicine in early South San Francisco

Tucked in underneath the Golden Gate Bridge is a structure that is seldom seen or even thought of by most people who go racing across the bridge to and from Marin County. Fort Point was built by the U.S. government to protect the Golden Gate Strait and the rapidly developing city of San Francisco. There had also been considerable concern prior to the Civil War that Southern sympathizers would attempt a takeover of the precious metals being mined in the Sierras or sabotage the Bay’s shipping in some way. Begun in 1853 and completed in 1861, army engineers built the fortress of bricks and added a 1,500-foot sea wall of granite blocks.
