A motion-activated surveillance system sparked a call to the Redwood City police about suspicious activity at a construction site on the 500 block of East Bayshore Road last Wednesday, and then a drone deployment led to an arrest.

At about 11 p.m. May 6 police got a call from Pro-Vigil, a private security company that uses the system to detect potential criminal activity. Technicians from the company detected someone entering the site. Officers deployed the department’s Skydio Drone as a First Responder, which arrived before ground units. Due to the size of the property and limited lighting conditions, the drone operator utilized a thermal imaging camera to quickly locate the suspect within the site. The suspect attempted to flee on foot toward an adjacent marsh area but the drone maintained continuous visual tracking, allowing responding officers to coordinate their approach and safely take the suspect into custody, according to police.
