Five months after San Mateo County officials came out in favor of same-sex marriage, Supervisor Rich Gordon has sent the governor a letter on behalf of the board asking him not to veto the pending bill legalizing gay unions.
Although Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has made no secret of his plans to veto the same-sex marriage bill passed by the full Legislature, the Board of Supervisors still pushed Friday for his approval.
"While opponents argue that allowing same-sex couples to marry would undermine the institution of marriage, it is discriminatory marriage laws themselves that undermine marriage. More importantly, this legislated discrimination undermines the State of California's commitment to equality, privacy and justice for all of its citizens," states the letter signed by Gordon on behalf of the entire Board of Supervisors.
The gender-neutral bill in question, AB849, was approved by both houses of the state Legislature but Schwarzenegger publicly stated his plans to veto the bill on grounds it was unconstitutional.
Although the county is quick to push the governor for action, it was not so quick itself in embracing the issue. Only this past April did the Board of Supervisors agree 4-1 to endorse the issue. Supervisor Mark Church was the sole detractor. Church did not return calls for comments about Gordon's letter to Schwarzenegger.
The push for local backing began late last year when San Carlos family Ramona and Arzu Gatto, plus their teen daughter Ramona, unsuccessfully sought a marriage license from the county clerk. Shortly after, the family pushed for county support and supervisors Gordon, Jerry Hill and Adrienne Tissier climbed aboard. At the last minute, Supervisor Rose Jacobs Gibson also gave her vote of approval.

While the local resolution carried no legal weight, supervisors hoped it sent a message to local state representatives. The Gatto family now hopes Gordon's letter sends a similar sign to the Capitol.
"If each and every community steps up, it will make a difference. These are the counties supporting the governor and showing the will of the people," said Ramona Gatto.
Gatto, along with her wife and child, lobbied hard in Sacramento prior to the Assembly vote. Her daughter, Marina, is a nationally recognized advocate for the rights of alternative families and their children.
"I'm extremely proud of Rich and the county and [the letter] tells our governor to really look at what our people want," said Marina Gatto.
