San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties have among the highest rates of marijuana users in the country, according to a new survey published Thursday by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Boston, Mass. and Boulder, Colo. had the highest rates of past month marijuana use in the nation, with an estimated 12.2 and 10.3 percent respectively, according to the Substrate Estimates from the 1999-2001 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health.
San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties had a rate of 9.2 percent, among the 15 localities in the nation with the highest rates of marijuana use.
Compared to Northern California, Southern California had a low rate of marijuana use with Orange and Los Angeles counties only reported 4.9 percent, according to the survey.
Other areas with high marijuana use were Western Colorado; part of the District of Colombia; the Island of Hawaii; Multnomah County, Ore.; Washington County, Rhode Island; and Northwestern Vermont.
The areas of the nation with the lowest rates of past month marijuana use were Western Idaho; Eastern Kansas; Eastern Nebraska; portions of North Dakota; Southeastern Oklahoma; and parts of Eastern South Dakota.
