A judge will decide Monday morning if two separate confessions by accused murderer and robbery suspect Sikai Telea can be used in his upcoming trial on charges that could potentially send him to prison for life.
Judge Mark Forcum is also considering defense motions to split Telea's alleged crimes into two separate cases and a motion to dismiss the case outright. Attorneys spent most of Friday arguing and Forcum reserved judgment until after the weekend.
Telea admitted his participation in the 2002 crimes but defense attorney Richard Keyes believes the confessions are inadmissible because they followed a different confession that was already been tossed. The prosecution argued the two interviews were not tainted by the earlier interrogation.
In October 2002, Telea allegedly participated in the fatal robbery of Wells Fargo Bank in Burlingame with three other men. Bank manager Alice Martel was fatally shot by ringleader Seti Scanlan; Telea allegedly shot another worker in the shoulder. On Nov. 1, 2002, the group and another man allegedly committed two commercial robberies before leading Mountain View police on a high-speed chase and shoot-out.
Once Forcum rules, jury selection continues with questioning about publicity of the crimes and Scanlan's murder trial last summer.
