An annual Coastside Gives event — which raises funding for 76 coastside nonprofits — has reached more than $1 million in contributions and is well on its way to an ultimate goal of raising $10 million in the 10 years it’s been operational.
Early giving has been ongoing since April 1, Mavericks Community Foundation Executive Director Amber Stariha said, with a final, 24-hour push online and in person May 1, though donations already totaling $1.7 million are still coming in over the weekend. Donors picked from a range of local nonprofits for donations — including Big Wave Group, Coastside Hope and Puente de la Costa Sur.
Combining giving efforts for all nonprofits into one event creates greater awareness of the event and of the organization’s various missions, Stariha said, which range from LGBTQ+ support to youth education services.
“Our approach has always been, we feel like a rising tide lifts all boats,” she said. “There’s really power in collaboration. There’s also power in lifting each other up.”
An in-person giving table has been set up at the New Leaf Community Market in Half Moon Bay, encouraging residents and visitors alike to give to the groups that serve their communities.
A flier distributed to all coastside residents before the event begins can also alert community members to the services being offered in their area, Stariha said.
“It’s about raising money in support of these local nonprofits. It’s also about raising awareness,” she said.
Throughout its nine previous years of fundraising, the Coastside Gives event has garnered more than $8.4 million in donations. This year, two goals were set — to raise $2 million in 2025 alone, and to meet the $10 million donation marker in total.
As of 4:45 p.m. on May 1, more than $1.2 million had been raised for the wide variety of organizations the event serves.
Nonprofits have come to rely on Coastside Gives as a fundraising resource that bolsters budgets for the fiscal year to come, Stariha said.
“As we are looking at Coastside Gives, we are always looking at it through a lens of sustainability,” she said. “Many of the organizations that participate now count on Coastside Gives as part of their annual fundraising plans.”
