celebrated the school's recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School by raising a flag awarded by the U.S. Department of Education for academic excellence.
Roy Cloud Elementary School in Redwood City received a $7,000 grant from the Allstate Foundation, as part of the insurance agency's charitable effort to benefit local education.

St. Dunstan Catholic School, in Millbrae, St. Veronica’s, in South San Francisco, and Sunnybrae Elementary School, in San Mateo, received donations from Wells Fargo to purchase athletic equipment as part of the bank’s annual Step Up To The Plate program.

Roosevelt Elementary School in Burlingame hosted 25 principals and administrators from Utah last month as part of the 21st Century Exemplar Schools program, which recognizes academic excellence.
During their trip, officials learned from Principal Matt Pavao about Roosevelt’s program focusing on applying problem-solving approaches to different subject matters, as well as real world issues. Roosevelt Elementary School is one of three Bay Area campuses which was recognized as an exemplary school.

Project Change, a collaborative initiative operated by the College of San Mateo, county Office of Education and county probation department, earned a Golden Bell award for providing educational guidance to incarcerated youth.
Project Change offers students in juvenile hall an opportunity to earn college credits while incarcerated, then guides them to the College of San Mateo, where they can receive ongoing educational support. The Golden Bell, granted by the California School Board Association, recognizes outstanding public programs for innovation, sustainability and best practices.

The county Office of Education received a $100,000 grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety to improve transportation for 10 local schools. The grant is a function of the Safe Routes to School initiative, which encourages children to walk and bike to their campus. The money will be used to provide bike and pedestrian safety education, school safety kits, bike helmets and safety presentations to surrounding communities.

Seventh-graders at Sandpiper School in Redwood Shores celebrated Veteran’s Day by learning about the war in regards to its history, the soldiers’ experience, the war’s impact on the nation and how it ended, among other aspects.
The Child Care Coordinating Council of San Mateo County recognized during a recent celebration the careers of Lupe Duran, a teacher in the San Bruno Park Elementary School District; Maryanne Patterson, the county’s Office of Education’s State Preschool manager; and Ruth Pinkus-Resnick, an early childhood language development expert with the county Office of Education.
