The Chan Zuckerberg Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging signed a major lease at the currently under-construction IQHQ’s Elco Yards development in Redwood City, expanding the institute’s presence in the city.
Located at 1601 El Camino Real, the 225,000-square-foot lease is valued at $375 million — though CZI would not publicly disclose the final cost — and will primarily be used for biomedical research. The newly signed lease is practically next door to CZI’s headquarters at 1180 Main St.
“Our expansion into Elco Yards underscores CZI’s commitment to the local community, strengthening its mission to cure, prevent or manage all disease by the end of the century,” Jane Packer, director of communications for the CZI community team, said in a statement.
Construction for Elco Yards, a life sciences hub pitched as a new district in downtown Redwood City, began in 2021 and is expected to be completed by 2026. The development will include four office buildings, homes for rent and retail space.
The Advanced Biological Imaging branch of the institute is expected to take occupancy in 2027, Pecker said.
Researchers at the institute’s branch “develop revolutionary new imaging hardware and software tools to build breakthrough multimodal biological imaging systems,” according to its website.
“The state-of-the-art labs and research facilities at Elco Yards are designed to drive critical discoveries and collaboration in the scientific community, and this expansion will enhance our imaging and life science capabilities,” Pecker said.
Co-founded by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, CZI’s established presence in Redwood City includes its Community Space located at 801 Jefferson Ave., providing a meeting and event space for nonprofit organizations.
“We are excited to continue to grow our roots in Redwood City with this new space for our biomedical research efforts,” Marc Malandro, chief operating officer of CZI and the CZ Biohub Network said in a statement. “Redwood City is CZI’s home, and we’re proud to continue investing in this vibrant community while driving collaboration and innovation in the heart of the Bay Area.”
