Cal Fire will be burning 250 acres near the San Mateo County coast this week, the agency said Monday.
The prescribed fires will burn coyote brush and grass in the San Gregorio and Pomponio areas of coastal San Mateo County started Wednesday through Friday, weather permitting.
“We are looking to reduce vegetative fuels and encourage coastal prairie habitat,” San Mateo County Burn Boss Sarah Collamer said in a statement released by Cal Fire. “A small portion of this burn is maintenance of a previously burned plot, but most of the area has not been burned at least in the last 50 years. These burns are strategically located on ridges north of the town of Pescadero and would help protect the town during a north wind event.”
Cal Fire will have “significant” fire suppression resources on scene including a bulldozer, multiple hand crews, a helicopter and numerous fire engines and water tenders, they said.
The fires are part of the state’s fuels reduction goals directed by the California Fire Plan and the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan, according to Cal Fire.
