New Zealand-born Paul Prendiville threw his hat in the ring of the Burlingame City Council race on Monday, taking out election papers to run for one of three four-year seats.
Prendiville, 49, is a general contractor who ran for the council in the last election. He originally intended to run for the two-year seat but reconsidered.
"I figured, what can you do in two years," Prendiville said. "I kind of thought Russ Cohen was entitled to it."
Cohen, president of the Burlingame Historical Society, was the runner up in the last election.
Prendiville said if he were elected he would encourage housing to be built on the Bayshore and pursue a smaller plan for Donnelly Plaza than the concept proposed by architect Dan Ionescu. Tenants near Donnelly might object to a building more than two stories high, he said.

Prendiville said he hoped to give the council fresh ideas and be a team player.
Prendiville first came to the United States in 1979 as a tourist and returned in 1987. He married and had a daughter.
Councilwomen Rosalie O'Mahony and Cathy Baylock and Mayor Joe Galligan plan to run for their seats again. Mike Coffey quit his council post July 1 and leaves open a two-year term.
Dan Andersen pulled papers to run Monday, as did Baylock, Don Lembi, John Root and Planning Commissioner Ann Keighran. Galligan and Gene Condon pulled papers Tuesday.
