The Peninsula Press Club awarded Burlingame High School's newspaper a first place prize in general excellence on Wednesday for the second consecutive year.
The Burlingame B newspaper won five prizes in the High School Journalism Awards Competition, defeating eight other schools from around the county. The B also earned first in Layout and Design, and Editor in Chief Alex Montalvo took second place in the news story category.
Alicia Rovai-Cruz of the Jefferson High School Tom-Tom won first place for news story. The Tom-Tom and the Eastside College Prep Panther received second and third place in the general excellence category, respectively, and the Mills High School Thunderbolt was handed an honorable mention.
Kim Segall of the Palo Alto High School Campanile won first place for feature story, Alexis Salas of the Tom-Tom won first place for editorial; Jonathan Steinman of the Campanile won first place for sports story; Michaelle Fernandez of the Tom-Tom won first place for news photo; Robin McNulty of the Palo Alto High School Paly Voice won first place for feature photo and Jose Ibarra of the Panther won first place for sports photo. Burlingame student David Tufo took second place in the sports story category.
The Campanile and Paly Voice Web site also pocketed nine awards.
The Peninsula Press Club, Hillsdale Shopping Center and Notre Dame de Namur University's journalism program sponsored the competition, and a reception was held yesterday at Ralston Hall at Notre Dame de Namur University.
