A rustic stone wall bearing the name of Belmont will soon greet those traveling into the city from neighboring San Mateo.
The gently sloping wall is part of a slew of $150,000 in improvements the Belmont Parks and Recreation Commission approved last night. The new sign at the Alameda entry way into Belmont will stand four feet tall at its highest point and be bookended by clusters of boulders. The idea is to give the sign the rural look that characterized much of Belmont.
Accompanying the stone wall will be some new landscaping on the east and west side of Alameda de las Pulgas; the newly-laid greenery will be bordered by walkways that connect San Mateo and Belmont. A bench will be added to the west side of the entry way, where residents can enjoy a view of downtown San Francisco.
The Parks and Recreation Commission also approved improvements just down the hill and around the curve at the Patricia Wharton Park.
The mini-park, located at the corner of Notre Dame Avenue and Middle Road in the Central Neighborhood, will get some new landscaping, pathways and benches.
Parks and Recreation Director Karl Mittelstadt said work on the projects will not begin until August 2005. The money is coming out of a parks improvement fund created by developer fees, Mittelstadt said.
