Students may not be returning to Bayside Middle School in the fall if a proposal to change its name to STEM Academy is approved Thursday.
Bayside Middle School for the Arts and Creative Technology could be changed to STEM Academy at Bayside — representing Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics — before the fall to represent changes at the school in recent years. Low test scores caused Bayside to enter Program Improvement in 2003, a federal system intended to improve schools with mandated changes, and the school strengthened its programs. Since then, a district leadership team composed of district office, school leadership, teachers and parents designed an instructional model called STEM to improve student achievement, draw students from across the district and provide unique classes, according to a staff report prepared by Toni-Sue Passantino, assistant superintendent of education services. The decision to make a change goes to the San Mateo-Foster City Elementary School District Board of Trustees Thursday.

This is not the first time a school in the district changed monikers. In 2005, Turnbull Learning Academy in San Mateo changed its name back to College Park Elementary for similar reasons.
The board meets 7 p.m. Thursday, May 1 at the District Office, 1170 Chess Drive.
