The case of a South San Fransisco man who allegedly beat an older man to death at a bus stop in August 2019 will begin initial jury trial proceedings on March 15.
The man, Vincent Jesus Osegueda, was transferred to a state mental hospital after his defense attorney declared doubt about his mental competency in 2020. He was restored to competency in March 2022, at which point he returned to the San Mateo County Jail, Sean Gallagher, San Mateo County chief deputy district attorney, said.
His trial has been continued several times, first by his original defense attorney Jeff Jackson, who continued the jury trial process from its original Feb. 10, 2023, jury trial proceedings date. His new defense attorney, Paul Demeester, continued proceedings from dates set in May and July of 2023 because he was in active trial for other cases, Gallagher said.
Osegueda is accused of beating a 62-year-old man to death at a bus stop near South Airport Boulevard and Linden Avenue while the victim waited to go to work at the airport. Osegueda allegedly approached the victim, got into an altercation, wrestled him to the ground and proceeded to beat him to death. A passing bus driver and a nearby worker saw the altercation and called 911.
Police arrived and found Osegueda trying to conceal the victim’s body near a fence 25 feet from the sidewalk by placing the body in ivy and trying to cover it with dried leaves. Osegueda had injuries to knuckles and hands, and he was arrested but declined to make a statement. There is no known motive for the attack, and the crime appears to be a random act of violence.
