As the Bay Area’s unseasonably warm weather gives way to possible rain showers over the weekend, beachgoers are being warned to expect hazardous conditions along the coast.
A high-pressure system will continue to keep temperatures up throughout the work week, with 60s to mid-70s expected near the coast and 70s to 80s expected in some inland areas, according to the National Weather Service.
Some places might even see record high temperatures that could run 10 degrees to 20 degrees above normal.
While balmy temperatures will lure people to the shoreline, the weather service is advising caution, as hazardous beach conditions are expected from early Thursday morning through about 9 p.m. Saturday.
During that time, people can expect a westerly swell to increase the risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents at Bay Area beaches, as well as breaking waves of between 17 feet to 22 feet and a High Surf Advisory lasting until Saturday night.
“Remember to stay off of jetties, piers, rocks and other waterside infrastructure, remain out of the water and never turn your back on the ocean,” weather service officials said Wednesday.
As the weekend progresses, the region will experience a cooldown and anywhere from a 10% to 30% chance of rain, with higher chances in the North Bay and coastal mountain areas.
The smattering of rain will likely continue at least through Tuesday, with total accumulations expected to be less than an inch in most places.
