Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf announced Thursday that the city will begin using renewable diesel gathered from raw materials such as cooking oil from local businesses to operate city vehicles.
The city already has run its fleet of vehicles on renewable diesel since 2015, but Schaaf said converting raw materials into diesel is another step in improving the lives of Oakland residents by reducing local emissions from the city’s fleet.
“Grease from French fries at local restaurants may wind up in the city’s fire trucks,” Schaaf said at a news conference in her office Thursday morning.
Oil from grease products and waste also will be used.
