President Joe Biden says in defending his new tariffs on Chinese products that China's government subsidies ensure its companies don't have to turn a profit, giving them an unfair advantage in global trade. The Democratic president on Tuesday slapped tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, advanced batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminum and medical equipment — taking potshots at presidential rival Donald Trump along the way as he embraced a strategy that's increasing friction between the world's two largest economies. The Chinese foreign ministry lashed out at the announcement. The tariffs come during a heated campaign between Democrat Biden and Republican predecessor Trump, both of them trying to show who's tougher on China.

Google has rolled out a retooled search engine that will frequently favor responses crafted by artificial intelligence over website links. It's a shift promising to quicken the quest for information while also potentially disrupting the flow of money-making internet traffic. The makeover announced at Google's annual developers conference Tuesday will begin this week in the U.S. when users will start to periodically see conversational summaries generated by the company's AI technology at the top of the search engine's results page. After testing the technology for the past year, Google is now bringing its AI overviews to the masses in a move that could trigger a sea change in web surfing habits.

Sales of raw milk appear to be on the rise, despite an outbreak of bird flu in U.S. dairy cows. Federal officials warn about the health risks of drinking raw milk at any time, but especially during the outbreak. Weekly sales of raw cow's milk have jumped compared with the same periods last year. That's according retail market research data show. Raw milk farmers say they can't keep unpasteurized products in stock. Some people claim that raw milk has health benefits, but multiple studies show it is one of the riskiest foods people can consume.

A tiny, low-priced electric vehicle called the Seagull has American automakers and politicians trembling. The car, launched last year by Chinese automaker BYD, sells for around $12,000 in China. But it drives well and is put together with craftsmanship that rivals U.S.-made electric vehicles that cost three times as much. Tariffs on imported Chinese vehicles probably will keep the Seagull away from America's shores for now. But the rapid emergence of low-priced EVs from China could shake up the global auto industry in ways not seen since Japanese makers arrived during the oil crises of the 1970s.

California could soon deploy generative artificial intelligence tools to help reduce traffic jams, make roads safer and provide tax guidance, among other things. The state has announced the new agreements Thursday with five companies. They are parts of Gov. Gavin Newsom's efforts to harness the power of new technologies for public services. The companies now enter a six-month internal trial where the state will test the tools before it can decide whether to launch the tools. Generative AI is a powerful technology that could help improve governmental works, but it needs safeguards and oversight. All the tools are considered low risk, meaning they don't interact with confidential data or personal information.
